Good News... Mental health could be
as easy as B*I*N*G*O!
That is the conclusion of a study that finds playing bingo helps
elderly people minimize memory loss, preserve visual acuity and
bolster hand-eye coordination.
The game requires a variety of skills that typically decline as
people age. But the study found that regular players of all ages
remained mentally sharp, showing that intellectual stimulation may
help maintain alertness.
"I've tried to stay active all
my life. I don't know if bingo has everything to do with it, but it
definitely helps,? said Fanny Yosca, a 91 year old who plays
multiple cards during her four bingo sessions each week. "It is
a nice way to stay social and active."
The study concluded that staying
mentally active helps a person's mental health just as staying
physically active wards off the signs of physiological aging. May
bingo players play more than one card simultaneously, turn their
cards upside down to make the game harder, or even do a crossword or
knit while playing "If that is the case, there could be a valid
therapeutic reason for recommending bingo," the study found.
