What We Do For The Community
The Mizell Senior Center meets the needs of the community through services provided at the Center and through outreach programs for seniors who are unable to visit the Center. Among the many programs provided at the Center are support group meetings, legal and peer counseling, music and dance programs, educational seminars, computer classes, fitness classes, holiday events, bridge, bingo, blood pressure screening, and social mixers. Outreach services include our nationally recognized Meals On Wheels Program that provides daily meals to an average of 150 participants each day.
The Mizell Senior Center was built in 1991 primarily through the generous support of individuals, businesses, and foundations. Since opening day, the building has been utilized by thousands of seniors and other members of the community. On a busy day, during our peak season, more than 1,000 people pass through our doors.
Most of the senior services are held seven days a week, during daytime hours. In the evenings and on weekends, many community groups hold their meetings at the Center. The result of many new services being added, since the original design of the building, has required continued changes in how the rooms are used and has resulted in an increase in wear and tear on the facility.
You can help! Several opportunities have been identified, by size, as individual, community group, business, or as a Community Challenge Opportunity.
If you or your group are willing to sponsor one or more of these opportunities, contact Dean Lockwood at the Senior Center by calling (760) 323-5689.

Community Challenge Opportunities
Throughout this brochure there are several items identified as Community Challenge Opportunities by this logo.
We are looking for individuals, clubs, businesses, or other organization to "adopt" these projects as their own. Imagine the satisfaction of knowing that your organization has helped to fulfill our mission of supporting independence and self-sufficiency for seniors. Of course, appropriate recognition will be given in press releases, at our Board Meetings, on our "electronic sign board," and in our publications.
If you can work along with our Board of Directors or our development office in attaining these special needs, call Dean Lockwood at the Center, (760) 323-5689.
Again we would like to thank those generous members of our community who have already made some of our wishes come true:

Remembering Our Mission
To support independence and self-Sufficiency through an inclusive network of education, information, and assistance with problem solving.
Mizell Senior Center administered over 6,000 flu shots to seniors and other Coachella Valley residents in the Winter of 1999 and again in 2000. We are consistent leaders in looking after the healthcare needs of the seniors we serve. Primary financial support for this important program was provided by Desert Healthcare District and Windsor Court Assisted Living. Their support and the support of dozens of volunteer nurses was invaluable.
Our Meals On Wheels Program served 37,370 meals to homebound seniors in the City of Palm Springs during fiscal year 1999-2000. Our outreach meal program grew to include two satellite sites, serving an additional 11,173 meals to seniors at satellite locations.
Opportunities for staying active abound at the Mizell Senior Center. Our popular monthly senior mixer program, bingo every Monday afternoon, daily bridge play, and the new gourmet dinner club are just a few of our active programs. There are also current event discussions, specialized support groups, and the popular computer classes.

Special Homebound Needs
Phone Cards for Seniors
Increased isolation from family and friends is a frequent problem found among frail and poor seniors. This program would provide ten, 500 minute cards, to 10 needy seniors in our Meals On Wheels Program.

Cost: $250 per set of 10 cards.

Facilities Improvements
Coffee Station - Wish Fulfilled - Thank You Dick O'Linn

One of the important aspects of what we do is to provide for socialization for seniors. For many this is as simple as having a place to come and have a cup of coffee in the morning and talk with a friend, rather than isolating oneself at home. The expansion of our programs, and the subsequent conversion of the Coffee Room into the Board Room, has necessitated moving the coffee station into the main hallway. We currently are utilizing a folding table and would like to have a cabinet build to provide a nice looking coffee station as well as storage for coffee supplies. Some minor electrical work will be required.

Cost: $750

Carpeting - Community Challenge Opportunity
Wish Fulfilled - Thank You City of Palm Springs

The number of members passing through our facility necessitates the replacement of the badly worn carpeting in the lobby and main hallway of the Center. Use of an attractive, durable, commercial grade carpeting will enhance the first impression people get when they walk into the facility.

Cost: $15,000

Painting
The Multipurpose Room is used for many events including daily meal service, daily bridge programs, and evening support groups. This is the last area in the building needing to be freshened with new paint.

Cost: $2,500

New Chairs - Wish Fulfilled - Thank you Palm Springs Rotary
Fifty (50) chairs are needed for use at the Center. These chairs will replace those which we have used for 11 years and are worn out or broken. These chairs need to be stackable and of high durability.

Cost: $2,000

Computers & Technology
Digital Camera - Wish Fulfilled - Thank You Dick O'Linn
A digital camera is now a necessity for developing brochures, catalogues and our Quarterly Report. This technology will enable us to maintain a library of photographs that will be used for fund raising and public relations purposes.

Cost: $650

Laptop Computer - Wish Fulfilled - Thank You Auen Foundation
With our LCD Projector that displays a computer image large enough for a group to see, we can take our Mizell presentations "on the road." A portable laptop computer will allow us to utilize the latest software programs and techniques to create first rate presentations for meetings and seminars. We believe this method of communicating our message to the community will result in increased donor participation.

Cost: $2,500

Larger Computer Screens for Computer Lab & Staff- Wish Fulfilled - Thank You Auen Foundation
We are using older style, darker, 15" computer screens in our computer lab and at many staff computers. The upgrading of the eight (8) screens in the lab to the new 19" size would be a significant improvement for our students and help to create a better learning environment. Four (4) additional screens will be used to upgrade staff computers to help reduce eye strain and increase work productivity.

Cost: $300 each

Electronic Sign Software Our electronic sign, at the corner of Ramon and Sunrise is the "face" many people see of the Mizell Senior Center. New computer instructions (software) to run the sign will allow us to utilize the sign as a fundraising resource as well as a community education tool.

Cost: $2,000

New Computers- Wish Fulfilled - Thank You Auen Foundation
A recent assessment of our business office computers show they are aging and prone to technological "glitches" and "down time." The newest enhancements to our business software is not available to the Center as our computers need upgrading to run this needed upgrade. The addition of ten new computers and printers would allow for faster processing of information, improved quality of work and improved efficiency.
Thank You: Dick O'Linn

Cost: $1,400 each

The Great Outdoors
Front Lobby Patio Enclosure - Community Challenge Opportunity Adjacent to our front lobby is a 1,500 square foot open patio area that is used for activities and special events. A permanent canvas covering, similar to the covering over our garden patio, will be installed to allow year 'round usage of this area. The complete project would include the shade structure, ceiling fans, misting system, heaters, and outdoor furniture.

Cost: $35,000

Garden Patio: Heaters & Misters only
A recent Community Development Block Grant provided the funds to cover our garden patio with a professional canvas cover, which allows year 'round use of the area for seating, card games, and an outdoor billiards table. The grant included enough funds to install ceiling fans for the warm summer months. Although provisions were made for the necessary wiring and water supply, heaters and a misting system were not included within that grant. The addition of heaters and a misting system would make the patio a comfortable area for year 'round socialization and activities.

Cost: $5,000

Outreach Van - Community Challenge Opportunity
Although we provide a large number and variety of services to seniors at our facility, and at the Palm Springs Senior Apartments, we know there are seniors we are not reaching, but who need our services. The purchase of a community outreach van would enable us to visit area shopping centers and mobile home parks to provide information, health, and educational programs to additional seniors in the community.

Cost $20,000

Audio Visual
Wireless Microphone
With the number of programs currently using the Noia Auditorium, there are times when our microphones are inadequate. The addition of a wireless, lapel microphone, would greatly enhance presentations and improve sound quality during the taping of seminars and workshops.

Cost: $350

Sound System- Wish Fulfilled - Thank you Robert & Felicity Binkow
A portable sound system that could be carried to any one of our meeting rooms will give us greater flexibility in room utilization.

Cost: $500

LCD Projector -
In a continuing effort to deliver our message to the community, we have developed several presentations for community groups, business leaders, government officials, foundations, etc., utilizing PowerPoint computer software. A recent grant has enabled us to purchase a laptop computer. Combining this equipment and technology with an LCD projector would provide us the ability to more easily deliver our message to the community and to raise additional funds.

Cost: $1,500

Entertainment
Upright Piano - Wish Fulfilled - Thank you Grace Jacobs
Over the years we have relied upon donations of pianos; however, the daily use of the stage piano in the Noia Auditorium has created a need for a better quality instrument than has been made available to us. The piano is used for various weekly programs: voice lessons, chorus, musical theater group, senior orchestra, as well as for public concerts and special events. A local distributor has offered us a quality stage piano at a considerable discount.

Cost: $3,000

Dance Floor
The portable dance floor in the Noia Auditorium is used every week for our Sunday dances and has served us well since we opened in 1991; however, this temporary flooring presents a trip hazard to seniors who are not always able to see that the dance floor is raised. A new, permanent, level dance floor would provide a larger space for the weekly Sunday dances, while creating a safer atmosphere for our seniors.

Cost: $10,000
