The Mizell Senior Center offers over 150 programs and services each month, all designed to meet the needs of the Desert's Active Adult community.

Serving the Greater Palm Springs community for over 36 years, Mizell is the leader in programming and services, including Music and Creative Arts, Fitness and Exercise programs, Support Groups and Legal, Financial, and Health Insurance assistance. Social programs include Bridge, Bingo, Knitting Circles, and a great lunch served daily. Mizell Senior Center of Palm Springs is now offering a Senior Fall Prevention Program.  This program is designed to teach Older Adults several steps they can take to protect their independence and reduce their chances of falling.  The classes will include education on fall risks, medication management, vision checking and improvement, home hazard assessment and modification coupled with a variety of exercise programs. The program lasts for six weeks and will meet on Friday’s beginning at 9:00AM. The next series will launch on Friday, October 7 with another scheduled for January.  Classes are limited to 15 participants.  To register, call 760-323-5689.

Each year, one in every three adults age 65 and older falls.  Falls can lead to moderate to severe injuries such as hip fractures and head traumas and can even increase the risk of early death.  Fortunately, falls are a problem that is largely preventable.  This program is designed to supplement the extensive exercise program at Mizell Senior Center, currently boasting 19 classes each week from Zumba Gold to Tai Chi and Fit After Fifty.

Mizell Senior Center of Palm Springs is now offering 19 weekly exercise classes for seniors and active adults. The classes are varied and are designed to meet the needs of most any activity level. According to a
2008 study from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) “Exercise is the only intervention that by itself reduces falls among older adults.” Why is this important? According to recent studies of Coachella Valley adults over age 55, over 20% are afraid of falling. For seniors over age 75, the fear of falling jumps to over 30%. According to CDC research, the fear of falling among older adults can lead to inactivity, decreased mobility, and actually increase fall risk. Fully 15% had actually fallen in the three months prior to the survey. Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among older adults and the most common cause of non-fatal injuries and hospital admissions. National studies of falls among older adults show that between 20% and 30% of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries such as bruises, hip fractures, or head trauma. Injuries from falls are the leading cause of loss of independent living for seniors.

As we are all living longer, Mizell Senior Center is committed to healthy aging programs and supporting Active Adults. As more baby boomers begin to confront their own challenges, they are also challenged with aging parents who are needing help and support.  We are here as a resource and as an advocate and pioneer in providing programs and services that support all people to enjoy a healthy and active life.
